When Thomas Moore saw his mom watching a video about a 5-year-old girl who had lost her hair to cancer, he decided to start growing his, so he’d donate it to kids who had lost theirs to chemotherapy.
There’s so much evil in this world, and it may be a cause for concern and negativity for many of us. That’s why it’s vital for all us to always make conscious efforts to remind ourselves that there’s still some good in this world that’s worth fighting for.
And one example of such stories is about a young boy who donated his hair to make wigs for kids with cancer.
When Thomas Moore was, 8 his mother showed him a video of five-year-old Kyssi Andrews, a young girl who had cancer and who’d lost her hair because of the side-effects of chemotherapy.
Unfortunately, Kyssi’s story didn’t have a happy ending. The young girl eventually succumbed to the illness and passed away.
But it turns out, Thomas took her story to heart and decided to serve as a silver lining—a shining beacon of hope for the kindness and goodness of human beings all over the world.
Thomas felt deeply sorry for the girl and for every other toddler battling with the same condition. So, he decided not to cut his hair for as long as it takes so that two wigs could be made out of it.
Letting It Grow
Because of his inspiring will and determination, Thomas’s story went viral right after his aunt tweeted about it, garnering more than 60,000 retweets in a matter of days.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, Tom’s aunt, Amber Ray, described how dedicated he was to achieving his goal.
“It started off just fine when his hair was shorter. But as the afro grew, they had to cornrow it to keep it nice and tame.”
The aunt explained that growing his hair for two years wasn’t always easy. He has a tender scalp and getting his hair braided brought him a lot of pain.
She added that at one time, Thomas was tempted to quit, but his family always encouraged him to keep pushing.
Amber told the outlet:
“We had to re-focus on the reason for growing it.”
Three Wigs for Three Cancer Survivors
Everybody was truly stunned by such a selfless act of kindness coming from the little boy. And as you can see from the pictures, the boy grew a pretty impressive amount of hair!
In fact, by the time he was done with his heartwarming project, Thomas had enough hair to make three wigs!
Tom’s mom also described how amazed she was at her son’s unrestrained selflessness.
“I think it’s really fantastic that he felt like he could do something so selfless to help somebody else so much.”
Kids should be taught the act of kindness and charity at a young age. And it’s the responsibility of every adult to educate children on the joy and love shared when they do something kind for someone.
