A daily cup of coffee and a glass of wine can actually make you live longer.

You may have been searching for the fountain of youth for years. And the notion of finding that magical food or elixir that cures everything has been around for millennia.

But it seems the secret to a longer life may be easier to obtain than you thought. According to a recent study, drinking coffee or alcohol in moderation may help you live longer.

Wait, what now? The same beverages we’re told aren’t good for our health, may actually extend our lives? Well, let’s take a look at the facts.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of California’s Irvine Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders and the Clinic for Aging Research and Education analyzed data from over 1,600 senior citizens — all of whom were over the age of 90.

Scientists discovered that those who ‘drank moderate amounts of alcohol and/or coffee lived longer than those who abstained.’

They also found that ‘people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people did.’

As with most things, the secret here is moderation. By no means, we’re not telling you to drink a bottle of whiskey or a pot of coffee in a day. Nor is anyone discouraging you from being physically active.

The study concludes that, for alcohol, about two glasses of wine or beer daily was linked to a reduced risk of premature death.

Dr. Claudia Kawas, a neurology professor at the University of California, Irvine, and the co-principal researcher in the study noted:

“I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking is associated with longevity.”

And when it comes to coffee, the “sweet spot” for caffeine was 200-400 milligrams a day, or around two cups of coffee.

Kawas explained:

“People who had that amount of caffeine, whether it came from coffee, tea, chocolate or other things, lived longer than individuals who had less caffeine or individuals who had more caffeine.”

While modest amounts of alcohol and caffeine appear to help you live longer, they may not protect your brain from dementia, which is a huge problem associated with old age.

Kawas said:

“Most of those things do not appear to be clearly related to cognitive abilities in [your] 90s, which is sort of disappointing. The sad part about that is we’ve added more years than we’ve added quality.”

This is not the first time scientists have found links between coffee or alcohol consumption to a prolonged lifespan.

Another study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that drinking up to eight cups of coffee daily can prevent premature death.
