Exciting news for ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ fans! Josh Lucas, who starred alongside Reese Witherspoon in the romantic comedy, has just announced he’s ready for the film sequel.
It’s been over 15 years since the romantic comedy was released in 2002, and Lucas recently revealed he’d revisit his character, Jake Perry, again.
Lucas told Entertainment Tonight at the July 31 Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual grants banquet:
“I’m up for it. I know Reese’s said she is as well. The director is absolutely up for it. I spoke to him about it a couple of times recently. So, look, I throw it out to you, Reese.”
“I think the person who’s the one to put it together is Reese, so I’m hoping. Who knows? She’s got a lot of irons in the fire, to say the least. Hopefully, this is one of them.”
Lucas added that the movie’s director, Andy Tennant, has already completed the script and film development. But a firm greenlight hasn’t been issued yet.
He also noted that Witherspoon would probably be the one to get the project going.
The original ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ won movie fans with its southern charms as well as childhood sweethearts’ plotline. And both leads had southern roots to back up their roles.
Witherspoon, who starred as a clothing designer, Melanie Smooter, was born in New Orleans and grew up in Nashville.
While Lucas, who played her estranged husband, Jake, was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He had lived in many places in the south until he was 13 years.
In the original film, Melanie got engaged to the most eligible bachelor, played by Patrick Dempsey, in New York. So, she went back to Alabama, a place she left long ago, to get her ex-husband Jake to sign divorce papers.
While she’s at Alabama, she finds her southern ties tugging at her big city sleeves.
As ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ fans well know, the film ends with Melanie ditching her fiancée, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), at the altar when her lawyer informed her, that her divorce wasn’t finalized and she was still legally married to her high school sweetheart, Jake.
Witherspoon has also expressed interest in making a second installment of the iconic rom-com, ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’
In a 2016 Facebook Live chat, she told fans, “I love ‘Sweet Home Alabama’!”
“We are not making a sequel that I know of, but if Disney wants to call me, I would happily make a Sweet Home Alabama 2!”
To prove they’re actually serious about making the sequel a reality, Lucas shared some ideas on what we should expect on the new film.
“I kind of love the idea that they have actually divorced and been divorced for a while and he wants her back,”
“Kind of to realize what he’s lost again and that the kids even, that their lives have separated in some ways, and I think that’s sort of the magic of that story is that there’s an eternal love there…That bond that they have.”
“Even when they’re apart, there’s something connected about the two of them. And that they’ve had it since they were little kids.”
