If you’ve already watched all episodes of Mindhunter season 2, you’re likely sitting with all sorts of questions about what the future holds for Holden Ford, Bill Tench, and the rest of the hit Netflix show’s cast of characters.
What will happens with Bill’s adopted son, Brian? Will the series ever show us the arrest of the BTK Killer? And, perhaps most importantly.. Will there be Mindhunter season 3?
In the 1970s, Atlanta wasn’t the city we know it as today, filled with tourist destinations and one of the US’s largest, most bustling airports.
Back in the 70s, it was smaller, not yet having reached its bonafide “big city” status — which is why it was all the more horrifying when African-American children began disappearing in 1979 summer.
For two years in the late 70s and early 80s, a whopping 22 children and six young adults were kidnapped and murdered in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
And now, the Atlanta Child Murders are prominently featured in season 2 of Netflix’s hit crime show Mindhunter, which dropped on the streaming service on August 16, 2019.
While season 1 featured its share of well-known murderers, including Ed Kemper and Richard Speck, the second season see FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench confronting some of the most notorious criminals in American history.
The season tries wraps up Ford and Tench’s investigation into the Atlanta child murders, but more serial killers continue to unfold.
This Netflix’s hit crime series was created by Joe Penhall and is based on the real-life experiences of former FBI agent John E. Douglas.
It recounts the efforts of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit to compile a database of serial killers’ psychological profiles and patterns.
During the murders, more than 100 agents were working on the investigation, led by Bill and Holden, and the series is set to follow the agents’ struggles to catch the perpetrator as more children continue to go missing, and bodies continue to be discovered.
So, will there be Mindhunter season 3? The executive producer David Fincher had previously said his goal was to have the show consist of five seasons.
But it was a bit confounding when season 2 came and went without even a renewal announcement.
Back in November 2019, it was revealed that season 3 had been put on indefinite hold as Fincher was working on other Netflix’s projects such as the second season of Love, Death, & Robots and a feature film called Mank.
Though the show hasn’t been canceled, on January 15, 2020, a Netflix representative confirmed that Mindhunter‘s cast had been released from its contracts.
But the spokesperson added there’s still a possibility that Mindhunter will return once David’s schedule clears up.
The spokesperson said:
“[David] may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”
