Ohio Shooting: Gunman Wore A Bulletproof Vest, And Was Stopped Within 30 Seconds Of Opening Fire Outside Ned Peppers Bar Carl FombyAugust 2019 The gunman in the deadly mass shooting in a famous nightlife district in Dayton, Ohio, was killed by police within 30 seconds after opening fire. According to authorities, the gunman was wearing a mask, bulletproof vest, earplugs, and was carrying a 223-caliber high-capacity rifle capable of holding at least a 100 round drum magazine. Dayton Police Chief, Richard Biehl, released a statement about the shooting that left nine dead, including the gunman’s sister, and more than two dozen injured. Biehl told reporters in a news conference on Sunday afternoon that the gunman, identified as 24-year-old Connor Betts, showed up to the city’s Oregon District on Saturday with his sister and a friend. The Police Chief added that the three separated at some point between the time they arrived and when Betts opened fire. It’s still unclear of what happened during that time. Officers patrolling the Oregon District heard the gunfire, shortly after 1:00 a.m., and saw a large crowd running to safety, authorities reported. The Police Chief said: “At 1:05 a.m. officers were patrolling the Oregon District during bar closing time and heard gunfire. They observed a large crowd running away from this gunfire.” “The officers immediately advanced toward the gunfire, and within approximately 20 seconds, they engaged the suspect, who was actively firing and attempting to enter a crowded liquor establishment.” “The threat was neutralized at approximately 30 seconds of the suspect firing his first shot.” Biehl also released a frantic 911 call from a witness, surveillance footage and the names of the six officers who responded to the gunfire. The officers weren’t injured. 27 people were injured when Connor Betts fired dozens of shots. #BREAKING #VIDEO: Bellbrook PD chief provides latest update. #wlwt @wlwt pic.twitter.com/9GfBWTdLqi— Dan Griffin WLWT (@DanGriffinWLWT) August 4, 2019 The Motive of the Bias Crime Remained Unclear, Police Said on Sunday After investigation, authorities found writings linked to the shooter, showing he had an interest in killing people. But a preliminary assessment of the writings didn’t indicate any racial or political motive, local and federal law enforcement sources told CNN. Biehl also told reporters: “We do not have sufficient information to answer the question everyone wants to know: ‘Why?’” “No evidence [that] suggests that there is a bias motive in this crime at this time.” Police Revealed the Assault-Style Rifle Used by the Shooter Was Ordered Online in Texas Public information officer for Montgomery County, Deb Decker, said Betts began shooting as he made his way toward Ned Peppers bar. Mayor Nan Whaley, explained her shock concerning the sudden mass shooting saying: “I really want to — think about that minute. The shooter was able to kill nine people and injure 26 in less than a minute.” “And if we did not have police in the Oregon District and the thousands of people in the Oregon District enjoying their Saturday evening, what we could have had in this city.” Police recovered the rifle used in the shooting and revealed it had been ordered online from Texas but transferred to the suspect at a local firearms dealer. Authorities also found a shotgun in the shooter’s 2007 Toyota Corolla, which was parked nearby. A Deadly End to a Deadly Week in America The Dayton mass shooting was the fourth similar incident across the country in the past one week. At least 34 people have lost their lives. On Saturday morning, 20 people were killed and 26 injured when a gunman opened fire at a shopping center in El Paso. Authorities are still investigating a racist, anti-immigrant screed they allegedly believe was posted on the LinkedIn page by the suspect. Last Tuesday in Mississippi, a shooting at a Walmart left two employees dead, and a police officer wounded. On July 28, a 19-year-old man wearing tactical gear opened fire at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, California, killing three people, including two children.
